She lets her finger brush over the words in the dictionary, having sat there for her entire lunch break already. She knows the bell is going to ring soon and she'll have to go to her next class, but she can't stop staring at the word or the words that follow it.
She's not stupid, she already knew what destiny was. Well she kind of knew. Looking at the words now though it seems to take on a bigger meaning. Something too big for her to even touch.
The bell rings and she closes the dictionary and rises to her feet. Usually she wouldn't care, but this year she's trying to do better. She wants to prove to everyone, and herself, that she can do better. She deposits the dictionary where it belongs and heads out into the halls. She's still running all of the words through her head and doesn't notice Blaine until she slams into him. He catches her and holds her shoulders.
"Brittany? You okay?"
She comes out of her daze and looks up at him. "Can I ask you a serious question Blaine Warbler?"
A little smile tugs at the corner of his lips and he nods. "Of course you can."
"Do you believe in destiny?" She asks it point blank, blinking at him.
His head tips and he studies her as though he's trying to gauge how serious she is. "Destiny? Like...fate?"
"No, destiny. something that is to happen or has happened to a particular person or thing; lot or fortune. the predetermined, usually inevitable or irresistible, course of events. the power or agency that determines the course of events." She repeats it from memory.
"Wow you...really did want to get serious." Blaine takes a breath and lets go of her shoulders as he turns to start down the hallway. She keeps to his side and walks along with him.
"I told you I wanted to ask you a serious question. You said I could."
"I know, I know...okay. Destiny...I don't know. I used to, but...lately I'm not sure anymore." His eyes are cast to the floor and Brittany watches this for a moment, but then she looks forward. Her thumbs hook under the straps of her backpack and she takes a glance at Santana's old locker as they pass it.
"Destiny is a real word, and it's in the dictionary, so I think it's real," she muses softly. "Everyone talks about it, and it's in movies and stuff. And if it really is real then maybe it's still working itself out."
"You can believe in destiny, Britt. You don't need anyone else to tell you it's real," Blaine tells her.
She nods. "I believe in it. I believe that Santana and I are inevitable and irresistible, and we're meant to happen. Do you think that's too silly?" She looks over at him, that familiar need for reassurance in her eyes. The look she used to hold for Santana.
Blaine stops walking and turns to look at her. There's a long moment before he answers, but his head shakes. "I don't think it's silly, I think it's beautiful."
Brittany beams and rocks on her heels a bit. "If we're destiny then I don't have to be sad, because it will work out in the end."
He laughs lightly and nods. "That's true. Maybe...I'm not the one you should be telling this to then."
"Who else would I tell?" She frowns. "Lord Tubbington doesn't believe in destiny. He thinks it's a bunch of crap."
"...no, not- I meant Santana. Maybe you should talk to her. Even if it doesn't make things like it was before, it might good for you to just tell her the things you're thinking about."
Brittany thought that over carefully. "What if she says it's silly?"
He just shrugs. "Then you wait and see if you can prove her wrong."
She grins again. "Blaine Warbler, thank you." She leans up and kisses his cheek. "I think I believe in destiny for you and Kurt too. I'll believe it real hard, okay?"
"Thanks, Britt," he says softly, his smile fading just a little.
With another bounce Brittany waves and goes into her classroom. As she sits at her desk and everyone gets ready for class to start, she takes out her cell phone and sends a quick and discreet text to Santana.
Look up destiny in the dictionary. Too long for me to type now.
