42/50] hero

Brittany wasn't too sure what she wanted to do after high school, but she knew she didn't want to go to college. It wasn't because she didn't think she was good enough for it, or because she thought it would be too hard, she just didn't feel like it was right for her. She loved dancing, but she wasn't sure she wanted to make it her life.

The only thing she knew for sure was that she wanted to get out of Lima. There were far too many memories there, and it felt like they defined her. She was tired of being Brittany S. Pierce, second time senior, once best friend and girlfriend of Santana Lopez. She had done her best to use her second senior year to figure out who she was without Santana, and it had been hard. Harder than she would admit to anyone. She had to learn how to operate as one person instead of as Brittany-and-Santana. She had to learn how to take care of herself instead of taking care of Santana while Santana took care of her.

She graduated just under the middle of her class, and for her that was a huge accomplishment. She knew she had worked as hard as she could. She had done it for herself and not anyone else.

Graduation itself had been difficult. She was losing yet another piece of familiar comfort in her life, and she still didn't know what to do with herself. All of the seniors from the year before came back to see their friends graduate, and that meant Santana was there too.

Brittany and Santana had avoided each other for a long time after their "not official break-up", and when they ended up in the same crowd they kept their distance. Brittany needed it to breathe. She needed it to move on. Santana had hurt her more than anyone possibly could, and she knew it was because she had given her entire heart and soul to the other girl. Every single part of her had been Santana's, and every single part of her fell apart when they split. As much as she missed having her best friend around, even in just that capacity, she couldn't. She had to keep space for herself. Santana respected it, and they barely spoke that year.

After the ceremony ended Brittany got away from her parents to go find her friends. Everyone took endless pictures, and hugged, and cried. Pictures were taken of Glee club, as well as a couple with the club alumni that came. Brittany and Santana, unlike every Glee club picture of them in the yearbook, stood on opposite sides of the group. After the camera flashes were done, Brittany went to find Mike so they could catch up, but on her way she crashed into Santana. Quiet literally.

It was a head on collision and Santana reached out to grab Brittany's arms in the surprise of it all. Britt pulled away and gave Santana a small smile. "Sorry," she said quietly.

"No..it's okay." Santana kept her eyes on Brittany, who wouldn't look her in the eye. A drastic change from a year before.

"I should-" Brittany started to move around Santana, but she was stopped by Santana's hand on her wrist.

"Britt. I'm so proud of you."

Brittany could hear the sincerity in Santana's voice and it hurt. She hated that it still hurt like that. She just nodded and smiled. "Thanks. I..really need to-" She pointed towards the crowd and immediately moved to get lost in it. She heard her name on Santana's lips, but didn't turn back. She couldn't. This year had been about moving on, and she needed to keep going.

In her hasty escape she ran into another person. Mercedes. Mercedes gave her a giant hug and congratulated her.

"What are you doing next?" Mercedes asked.

Brittany shrugged. "I don't know. I thought about trying to get back into Perdue, but I don't think I'm emotionally invested in chickens anymore."

The other girl blinked for a moment, then let that go and moved on. "I hear Santana's moving to New York instead of going back to school. Do you think you'll-" She stopped when she saw the look on Brittany's face.

"Santana and I still aren't getting back together," Brittany said in almost an automated tone. Everyone kept expecting they would now that high school was over and that Santana was changing her life, but it wasn't going to happen. They hadn't even discussed it as a possibility, and Brittany was good with that. "I don't know. I think I just want to leave Lima," she shrugged.

"Hey, I'm lookin' for a roommate in L.A.," Mercedes suggested. "The girl I was livin' with just moved out and it's real hard to pay all that on my own. You could always come out there."

The idea settled on Brittany, and she didn't hate it. In fact she kind of really liked it. L.A. sounded so shiny and new; it was different. She needed new and different. "Could I bring Lord Tubbington?"

A look of distaste crossed Mercedes face, but she pushed it away. "I'd hafta check with my landlord, but I'd be okay with it. I mean...you'd hafta be able to get a job and pay for your half of the bills."

"I can do that," Britt nodded, starting to look excited. "Would you really want me to live there with you?"

Mercedes took a beat, but then she smiled with a nod. "Yeah, actually, I really would. It'd be nice to have a real friend from home out there with me."

Brittany beamed. "We're real friends?"

"'Course we are girl. After all we been through?" Mercedes linked her arm through Brittany's. "We're one half of the Troubletones, girl. L.A. won't know what hit it."

Brittany looked down, her face flushing red with her smile. It sounded good. It all sounded so good. "Thank you, Mercedes. Thank you for reminding me of my amazing potential in this world and offering me a hand out of Lima. Even though you have way more soul than me, I think we could be really good friends again."

It took a moment for Mercedes to decide how to take that, but eventually she laughed. "Just call me your Mercedes in blingin' armour."

"Thank you Mercedes in blingin' armour, I won't let you down." Brittany threw her arm around her friend and hugged her tightly. Maybe a fresh start in L.A. was exactly what her life needed.
